PURCHASE THE BEST OF RICHARD CONWAY-JONES CASSETTE VIA GRAPEFRUIT RECORD CLUB!

It was a minor splash but a splash nonetheless. Those who hold dear the mid-nineties release of The Marilyn Decade on Freek Records love it for it’s gorgeous melancholic guitar playing and somnambulant jangle. Information on who the two guitarists were who compose the band remained a mystery.

Thanks to intrepid music journo Ned Raggett, some of that mystery can be answered. Richard Conway-Jones, one half of The Marilyn Decade, has been maintaining a website cataloguing his musical releases and paintings. He’s been creating art from his Twyford home for over two decades.

Conway-Jones’ method of production, and impressive output, places him in a rarified league populated by some of the most distinct musicians. He does not quite sound like R Stevie Moore, Jandek, nor Robert Scott, but there’s a line that connects him. The Best of Richard Conway-Jones captures home-recording at its finest. Many songs are just guitar and his soft, nuanced vocals. Others have female vocal accompaniment, or a thick guitar distortion breaking in. The result is a musician unbounded by expectations, creating essentially beautiful songs from an intimate vantage point.
